Ants may rule the hill, but they don’t rule here! Art by Landon

Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a seventh-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration in the fall of 2014 and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on one Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. Click HERE to visit the page and enjoy past episodes.

Today it’s my pleasure to share a creative collaboration from . . .

Linda Mitchell, Her Niece Aleah (14 yrs. old), Her Niece Cora (12 yrs. old), and Her Nephew Ian (11 yrs. old)

This delightful bit from Linda made me laugh: “Well. I’m a terrible rule breaker. I sent out a “call for submissions” and got not one not two but THREE pieces of art from my family. This is wonderful. I live in Virginia. My nephew lives in NH and my nieces live in WA. We are so far apart that this kind of collaboration over the holidays was just great for us!”

She went on to say that I could choose a pairing and she would feature the other two on her blog. I said, “No way! Let’s have all three!” And so we have a triple treat today 🙂

  1. I am tickled that you sent a call for submissions, Linda. Maybe that’s something all of should do. You certainly received some marvelous ones! Aleah’s picture is a poem itself! And Cora’s art should hang by your writing space. Ian’s splashes of color is such a subtle picture of a sunset. And your poems are uniquely matched to each drawing, and I imagine you connected to each personality, too. Thanks Linda, and Penny like always!

  2. Penny, thank you for showcasing Linda’s family for a triple-decker treat this week. Not only were the art pieces beautiful works but the poems gave us a quick peek into the family members. Linda’s choice of words were filled with magical moments to light up the children’s art.

  3. I feel like a whole book could be written around Aleah’s picture! What a neat starting point. Cora’s art was just right for a writer, and Ian brought us that splash of color. I’m glad you featured all three, Penny!

  4. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I’m home from a week of school with my first cuppa poured and opening up to Poetry Friday. Thank you so much for the invitation to collaborate. I think there will be more collaborations in my family in the future. It’s just too much fun not to. You are an inspiration of sharing and delight in the “Poems of Others” (one of my favorite Billy Collins poems). You have made the week of at least four of us. Have a great week and I wish you many delicious writing thoughts.

  5. What a wonderful triple treat! The artwork is amazing. The hourglass ship is an incredible drawing. Linda’s poems match and enhance each piece with a touch of the artist’s personality. Thanks for sharing.
