Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a seventh-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration in the fall of 2014 and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. Click HERE to visit the page and enjoy past episodes.

The poem I wrote for today is a revision of a poem I wrote in 2012. I revised it in response to a challenge issued by Jane Yolen when she visited with Michelle Heidenrich Barnes on Michelle’s blog, Today’s Little Ditty. Jane challenged us to write a septercet. A septercet is a poetry form she invented that has lines of seven syllables organized into three-line stanzas. It may be rhymed or not, with any number of stanzas.

  1. I love both the poem and illustration! Landon is really becoming an amazing artist!! I’d turn your poem into a picture book, if I were you!!

  2. This time, Landon’s art is for framing, Penny, catching that witch’s energy in her spell-making, no wonder she has to go to bed! I continue to love every time you share, and that final challenge of Landon’s hidden object, found again! Thanks, and Happy Halloween!

    1. Hi, Renata. Thanks for coming by and commenting. We visited my parents in Oct. and I asked them about you. So glad you’re staying in touch with them I hope you’re enjoying CA. Dad said you can walk to the beach. How wonderful! Sending love ❤

  4. Yippee! I’ve been waiting for this spellbinding septercet! The bags of spells in my pantry are called m&ms, milky ways, twizzlers and twix. They all do more or less the same thing, though. 😉 Now I’m waiting for your first PB collaboration with Landon. The vibrant, energetic art matches your poem perfectly! Spooktacular!

  6. This is so fun. I love the names of the spells. Shriveled Shrew? Yuck! And look at the expression on that witch! She’s having so much dastardly fun. Happy Halloween!

  7. Landon’s art work this week would make an amazing Halloween t-shirt design. Is he beginning to do more graphic designs like this one? I remember reading your poem aloud to my students when we were practicing septercets. Great rhyming patterns here .

      1. Landon is liking this comic style right now when he illustrates people. But you are right he is into lots of different mediums and styles!
As always, thank you for the opportunity to let him m shine along side your work Penny.
