Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a seventh-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration in the fall of 2014 and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on one Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. Lynne Marie and her Daughter, Kayla Michelle

From Lynne Marie: Kayla and I are honored to have our art/poem featured on Penny’s wonderful and unique blog. We love collaborating and hope that our post will inspire other parents and children to enjoy a fun project together. Thank you, Penny, for your blog and all you do for Children’s Literature.

Kayla and I are former New Yorkers who live Florida. We love the Florida life, but among other things, miss autumn and the change of seasons. Although Florida does not have the pick-your-own-pumpkin fields we grew up nearby on Long Island, they have “pumpkin patches” where countless pumpkins of all shapes and sizes are lined up to choose from. We also love anything and everything pumpkin flavored! A love for pumpkins inspired Kayla’s poem.

To accompany Kayla’s poem, I chose to work with hand-cut paper, something that I love to do.

Meet Kayla Michelle: Kayla Michelle is an aspiring author/illustrator who currently attends Middle School in 7th Grade. In addition to art and writing, her hobbies include singing, dancing, acting and piano playing. She is a true Broadway nerd and will be appearing in the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Performance Project production of Dorothy meets Alice, the Wizard of Wonderland in December, 2016.

Meet Lynne Marie: Lynne Marie is the author of Hedgehog Goes to Kindergarten – illustrated by Anne Kennedy (Scholastic, 2011) and Hedgehog’s 100th Day of School – illustrated by Lorna Hussey (Scholastic, January 2017). Her stories, poems, and folk tales have appeared in many magazine markets, including Family Fun, Highlights, High Five, Spider, Baby Bug and more. She is an on-staff writer for Jon and Laura Bard’s Children’s Book Insider and a book reviewer. She lives on a lake in South Florida with her daughter and several resident water birds.     1. I love the change of seasons. It’s not as bold in Texas as it was in Colorado where I grew up, but we still get fall colors and I love that. It’s nice that Lynne Marie and Kayla Michelle brought fall to everyone today.

  5. What a lovely and talented pair (who I hope are safe and sound in their Florida home). I guess we take some things, like pumpkin patches, for granted until we discover they aren’t everywhere! Of course then it’s sweet to write about them, so I guess it’s win-win no matter what!

  8. Choosing that perfect pumpkin is lots of fun, and sometimes we pick more than one! Love this poem that brings so many good memories, and the cut paper brings those paper pumpkin cut-outs back too. Wonderful collaboration, Lynne Marie and Kayla. I hope all is well with you in Florida!
