Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a seventh-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration in the fall of 2014 and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. Click HERE to visit the page and enjoy past episodes.
Today it’s my pleasure to share a creative collaboration from . . .
Laura Mucha and Her Friend’s Daughter, Poppy
From Laura: Sometimes writing can feel very isolated – I write things, they get published and I don’t see or hear what people think when they read what I’ve written. So it’s been a real privilege to be able to work with Poppy. Now when I read the poem, I enjoy it much more now for having seen her excellent artwork. I think the character Poppy has created has a great attitude, an attitude which suits the mood of the poem – and her illustration has a real humour to it, which makes me smile. I have really, REALLY enjoyed collaborating – thank you Penny for inviting us to take part.
Laura’s Poem
Poppy’s Art

Poppy at work.
Many thanks to Laura and Poppy for sharing their talents with us today.
Meet Poppy: Poppy Turner is a London born 9 year old. She adores art, food, music and chiefly fun and laughter. Infectious in spirit, interested and always keen, Poppy is constantly drawing and doodling, so when asked to illustrate Laura’s work she leapt at the chance.
Meet Laura: Laura relishes creating characters, images and stories for children, usually in the form of poems and picture books. She won this year’s Caterpillar Poetry Prize, and her illustration and poetry have been published by Bloomsbury, Macmillan, The Irish Times, The Caterpillar, Springboard Stories, and Stew. She also enjoys performing children’s poetry and recently performed at Latitude Festival, home to Europe’s largest poetry arena.
Laura worked as a face painter, studied flying trapeze, philosophy and psychology, and swam in Antarctica before becoming a lawyer for an international law firm.
That’s a great collaboration! 😀

What a fun original poem. And that green gob in the little girl’s mouth perfecty expresses suspicion for all green edibles.

I liked how she included all things green in the poem..frogs, bugs…it adds to the humor. And I adore the green earrings in Poppy’s drawing 🙂

I have the same feeling about sprouts, my dear! 😀 What a fun poem, and such fun artwork to complement it.

I love almost everything green, including sprouts. But this poem and drawing capture the feelings of so many people that I know who shy away from all things green!

It’s that matter-of-fact, foot-stomping rhythm that shows what’s really happening about those greens. I love it! And Poppy’s picture with what looks like green pea earrings is a delight. Thanks Penny, Laura and Poppy!

I think she is misunderstood, Michelle! It appears she’s been trying…at least mental attempts!

Great job, girls! I fully expected to see MY picture at the bottom of the poem. I have eaten ALL of those things and more. Once I ate a butterfly. Mom said, “Oh no you didn’t.” But oh yes I did!!
Love and licks,
