Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a seventh-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration in the fall of 2014 and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. Click HERE to visit the page and enjoy past episodes.
Yes, we’re back! And very excited to start off with a riddle poem for our readers. This is going to be very easy for some of you because you have been following the series long enough that you will immediately know the answer to the riddle. But I still think you’ll have fun with today’s post 🙂
Why a riddle? Here’s why! Landon includes an object in his art. It’s always the same object. Granted there are a few episodes that don’t have the object, but the majority do. Even though some of you have found the object, there are those who can’t ever find it. So I thought it would be nice to give clues in the form of a riddle.
I’m featuring a few of Landon’s drawings from past episodes. Along with the drawings, there is a riddle poem to give clues to readers. Enjoy Landon’s talent and search each drawing for the object before moving to the next drawing and next clue. Then see if you can guess the answer. OK. Here we go!
Just in case you’re not quite sure, here are a few hints in the form of underlined words.
If you’ve drawn a conclusion,
then give it a go.
Erase all your doubts,
and mark it below.
Thanks so much for joining us today. I appreciate all of you who read this series. See you next week when I’ll have guest collaborators.

What a fun post! Reading each line with a new drawing was a real treat, and this collaboration between the two of you is a lifelong gift. Thank you for the poem, the art, and the special hidden object, one of my favorite things. I also wanted to tell you that I was delighted to find your book in my Barnes and Noble last week (south of Buffalo, NY!) xx

I just came from Julie Larios’ post, about this same “hidden object”-so great, and now awesome pictures by Landon, and clever clues too. I always search, and love the varied “aspects” of this hiding object. Wonderful start to your starting back, Penny.

Thanks for telling me about Julie’s post, Linda. I’m sure I would’ve gotten to it eventually but since you told me, I hurried over to enjoy.

Delightful! I am inspired to share my own riddle poem for two voices about this object. It’s part of a series of riddles about everyday objects that I wrote for school visits. Readers speak alternate lines. (They are set up in alternate columns on the page.)
I start out long.
I start out lean.
I start out bright.
I start out clean.
Then I get used and waste away.
Growing shorter every day.
I get gnawed and chomped and chewed –
get no respect from teeth – they’re rude!
I begin my life as a useful utensil.
Soon – too soon – I’m the stub of a . . . .
