Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a sixth-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration in the fall of 2014 and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. Click HERE to visit the page and enjoy past episodes.

It’s the second Friday of the month so normally Landon and I would be collaborating. But instead my great niece, Lorelai, is sharing her artistic talent today. Lorelai is in kindergarten and her interpretation of my poem brought many smiles to my face.

Lorelai said she felt like the poem was about how the ducks let all the other momma and baby animals join in their spring parade

  2. Where I live, springtime seems to be dragging its feet, but your poem and Lorelai’s amazing artwork brought some sunshine to a cloudy day!

    1. “It is really rainy here, and I wish I could ride my bike more. But, I’m spending lots of time in my garden with my mom and our flowers need the rain. I hope the sun visits you more too!”- Lorelai

  3. This is fabulous, both the poem and the art! Can’t get enough of kids’ art. The whole scene is full of springtime color and energy. Lorelei, keep that pencil and those crayons busy!

  4. Thank you, Penny, for inviting Lorelai to partner with you. As an Early Literacy teacher and her mom, it opened so many doors for meaningful conversation between us. I loved that she took your words and visualized them in her own way. She focused her brain power on talking about what could be happening with the animals much more than the physical acts of drawing and coloring. She told stories about why the baby birds weren’t flying, why the smallest lamb was in the back, and why there was a present falling from the sky. Just from your one poem and her illustration, dozens of stories could be imagined and written. Thank you, thank you, thank you for publishing this series on your blog.

    1. Thanks so much, Lyndi! I love that this was so meaningful for Lorelai…and for you. I’m such a fan of collaboration—text and art. I know that’s a huge reason I’m drawn to picture books! Thanks for spending the time to be a part of the series.
      Love y’all!!!

      1. I can usually come up with some relevant, punny comment but my heart was too full with the sweetness I see here. 🙂

    1. Lorelai was adamant that there be balloons in the duck parade. I love how she made them in various sizes and colors!

  10. Oh my goodness – the only thing more precious than Lorelai’s art is Lorelai herself. Her interpretation of your bright poem is so exuberant! So much detail and care in her piece, and I dare anyone to look at it without smiling. Thanks for another great installment! :0)
