Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a sixth-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration in the fall of 2014 and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests.

Rosi Hollinbeck and Granddaughter, Gracie

Gracie’s pottery was the inspiration for Rosi’s poem. Rosi said, “It just kept nagging at me to write about it as it sat on the sideboard in our dining room.”

Meet Gracie: Gracie Anderson just turned ten this summer and is quite the artist and musician, presently learning to play ukulele. She attends a charter school for the fine and performing arts, Creative Connections Arts Academy in North Highlands, CA. Gracie is in 5th grade and sings in the choir. She also takes clay classes at the Mud Hut in Grass Valley, CA and loves working with clay, painting with acrylics and water colors, drawing, and writing.

Meet Rosi: Proud grandmother Rosi Hollinbeck spends most of her time writing for young people, but also writes adult fiction. Her work has appeared in Highlights for Children and High Five magazines. Her story-poem The Monster Hairy Brown was published by London publisher, Thynks, in their anthology 50 Funny Poems for Children. She also writes book reviews for San Francisco, Manhattan, Tulsa, and Portland Book Reviewsspecializing in children’s books. She blogs at The Write Stuff and has a giveaway of a book almost every week.

  6. I “sea” so much talent here! Great job, Gracie! And you sing, too! I love your dedication to the arts and I’m so happy you get to connect with your grandma this way, too! Awesome collaboration! You two were “maid” (mermaid, that is) to work together!

  10. Gracie’s sculpture is really creative and you can tell from her photo that she has style! How wonderful that she and Rosi collaborated and created such a complete artistic result!

  13. I love, Love, LOVE this! Rosi, her sculpture is wonderful and your poem is so fun! Maybe Gracie can use her ukelele and give “Queen of the Sea” a melody and make it into a song.

  19. Love the pottery and the poetry – especially the part about the tail shriveling if the mermaid gets kissed! Darn those old dishes! I understand seaweed is a “fishth” to scrub! 🙂

  21. Oh my gosh — I LOVE that chores are going to rescue this little mermaid from her usual fate. Gracie, your mermaid has such a happy expression on her face, I can’t help but smile along with her.
