This week Laura Purdie Salas is hosting at Writing the World For Kids. If you’d like to know more about Poetry Friday, click HERE for an explanation by Renee LaTulippe.

Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a sixth-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration in the fall of 2014 and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. Click HERE to visit the page and enjoy past episodes.

Since it’s a second Friday, Landon and I are up!

The Art

When Landon’s mom sent me his art, she happened to mention that S’mores are one of Landon’s favorite desserts. No wonder his S’more drawing is heavenly 🙂
(By the way, don’t forget to look for Landon’s “signature” hidden object! I admit that I completely missed it and suggested to his mom that he might want to add it. But she let me know it was there—just hidden very well.)

Thanks so much for joining us today. Come back next week for a new guest episode.

  1. Another congrats for “flame-licked” – and another terrific collaboration. TOOO fun and clever – the angelic S’More, the hidden object, the whole concept! Thanks for sharing all this familial talent. :0)

  2. Mmmm… love that “flame-licked” marshmallow, Penny. Ooey Gooey Yumness! Love how Landon turned the melty marshmallow into the angel’s robes. And thanks for the reminder about looking for the pencil– so clever that boy is. SO clever!

    1. So clever is right! I love the “flame-licked” too, Michelle—maybe because it takes patience to get a perfect flame-licked marshmallow. Golden brown and gooey, right before it’s ready to drop off into the fire! Yum! It’s always worth the patience.

  3. Love it! I’m remembering when we made S’mores the first night at the EMLA meeting in Wisconsin. Perfect description, Miss Penny! And congrats to Landon, too, for his usual superb depiction.

  4. When I saw that heavenly s’more, I knew I had to come over and read what inspired such a great drawing. Well done, both of you. And yes, I see the hidden object. Very clever!

  5. I see the signature object!! Of course you know I’m drooling all over your poem and Landon’s drawing — heavenly s’mores — brilliant (and so true). 🙂

    1. Hint: Landon’s hidden object is necessary for a writer or an artist. It can record a poem, a manuscript, or create a drawing. It’s best when sharp and even though most wish to be a #1 … this item is most popular as a #2 smile emoticon

  6. I found the hidden object (thanks to Linda Baie’s hint). Well done, Landon! That’s not easy to do. I also love the shapes and abstract quality of this piece. And the poem, of course, is luscious!

    1. Laura, I posted this in one of your 15 word challenges. It was the one with the fire pit as the prompt. Anyway, my original had “graham cracker squeeze” which didn’t fit the meter as well but I felt like I needed “cracker”. In comments you suggested I remove it, so I did and I like it so much better 🙂
Landon’s hidden object has appeared in all but two (I think) of our episodes. I can’t give it away here where everyone will see it, but I will PM you on Facebook with a hint 🙂

  7. It took me a while, but I found the itty bitty hidden object. Great drawing and poem featuring one of my favorite desserts, too – except I use a fork instead of a stick and the stovetop instead of a campfire. It still works! Yum!

  8. Wonderful, poem and art, & I spy that hidden object, but won’t tell. It’s quite skinny, there’s a hint. There aren’t many sweet things nicer than s’mores! Thanks, Penny & Landon. I enjoyed meeting you last week, & hope you had a wonderful time in Denver.

  9. Great Aunt, Great Nephew; I cry Uncle–hard as I’ve tried, I can’t find the hidden signature…S’Mores great poems–that’s what I’m looking for…God bless this talented team. What a special grace for all involved. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thanks for coming by. It’s not really a signature but an object that is his “signature” object for most drawings in this series.

      1. Your clues are perfect…Went back to your site…Found it! …Don’t know who’s most blessed–you, your great nephew, or us! Thanks for taking time to share the clues….

  10. I love your poem. S’Mores are one of my favorite, also. The art is fantastic. Landon is very talented. BUT, where is this hidden object. I see the tall flames as maybe the “love” hand sign, and on the s’more there could be a four-legged animal. I doubt I found it. Very well hidden. Landon could make one of those find the hidden objects puzzle and frustrate many puzzle lovers. (So where, or what, is the hidden object?)

      1. Is this picture upside down today? Was quite sure it was the other way around yesterday. Now I am really confused. Your clue threw me for a while. I kept thinking computer. I think I know what it is and I think I’ve found it. I recalled seeing this in many of the other pieces you two have done (I looked at many a while ago–very nice, all of them).

        1. Sue…I blew it. I had it upside down when I first posted it! Landon’s mom corrected me! The picture was sideways when she sent it and I just assumed the halo was a plate of sorts and that wings were white flames! LOL!
