Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just in case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a fifth-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration last fall and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. I know anyone involved with Kidlit must be as excited as I am about this collaboration. Elaine tirelessly brings us all things kidlit through Kidlit411. And Tomie dePaola is a kidlit treasure.

When Elaine sent me the art and the poem, I emailed back and said, “I wondered . . . did Tomie’s art inspire your poem or vice versa?”

Elaine answered, “He inspired me!! (As he always does!!!)”

I was inspired by both the art and the poem.

  6. I had no idea that there was National Chocolate Cake Day. I have immediately put it on the calendar. Thanks to Elaine and Tomie for helping us celebrate today. A granddaughter’s birthday is very soon, think I might share that cake picture with her gift! And love ‘finger in the batter”-don’t we all dip in? Thank you Penny!

  16. I love Elaine and everything she does! And everybody loves Tomie…soooo, what a winning combination! Elaine’s poem made me giggle out loud! I think I might have to bake today….mmmm!

  17. Awesome poem, Elaine!! I especially loved, “finger in the batter”! I think all PB writers dream of having Tomie dePaola illustrate their work, no matter in what order it happens!!

    2. I loved that line, too, Lori! It captures my childhood memories…oh who am I kidding?? I had my finger in the batter just this week when I made my pineapple cake with cream cheese frosting 😀
