Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just In case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a fifth-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration last fall and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of the month…except for today.

We switched to the first week this month because Landon has been drawing the Statue of Liberty. We have two of his drawings today. His drawings inspired my poem, Liberty. Being that the Fourth of July is tomorrow it seemed the perfect week for this post.

I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. Click HERE to visit the page and enjoy past episodes.

  1. Beautiful both, illustration and poem. Thank you Landon and Penny.

AND it was wonderful to see you and most of the Parker clan together on the 4th.

  2. Love that time lapse video, Landon. So clever to capture the shapes with shadow– I never thought of that! Will have to mention the technique to Miranda and show her the video. And Penny, your poem captures the feeling of liberty perfectly. Every time I see another wordplay poem (and I’ve seen quite a few post-May), it makes me smile from the inside out.

  3. Fantastic! And so appropriate for this weekend! I particularly loved the time-lapse video. As someone who doesn’t know where to begin with drawing, I found watching Landon and the techniques he employed so useful. Happy 4th of July to you both and to your families!
