Hello, Great Readers of our series! Just in case you haven’t visited before, let me tell you a little about A Great Nephew and A Great Aunt. My great nephew, Landon (a fifth-grader) and I (his great aunt) collaborate. I write a poem which he illustrates. We started this collaboration last fall and have had so much fun with it that we decided to invite others along. Landon and I will continue to have a new episode on the second Friday of each month. The other Fridays are filling up quickly with guests. I have created a page on my website to view all the episodes of A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. You’re in for a treat as I welcome our young collaborators. Erik is 13 years old and Josie is 11 years old. Prepare to be wowed!

I totally get that! Josie’s watercolor is fabulous and inspiring. So is Erik’s poem.

Meet Josie: Josie is an eleven-year-old fourth grader who loves art. She has a picture published in an anthology and a poem published in Ladybug Magazine. When she is not drawing, Josie races go karts competitively at local tracks. She wants to help animals when she grows up.

Meet Erik: Erik is a thirteen-year-old seventh grader who loves to read. He started his blog, This Kid Reviews Books, when he was nine. Erik writes a monthly book review column for the Upper Bucks Free Press. He self-published his first book titled “The Adventures of Tomato and Pea: A Bad Idea.” He has a poem and a short story published in two anthologies. He holds junior black belts in Taekwondo and Okinawan Karate. In his spare time he likes to play the trumpet and form plots to take over the world.

  7. So glad I stopped by…I wouldn’t have missed Erik and Josie for the world. Josie…I love your painting…your colors are vibrant (not easy to do with watercolor) and your stylized waves are awesome. Erik…your poem makes me feel like I am in the ship on the waves…watch out! Storm ahead! I’m glad the ship sailed on. And I LOVE that nothing was broken except for the dawn…so so so clever. 😉
    Congratulations, you two…you renew the faith of every parent and teacher!

  9. So awesome, E and J! The picture made me a little seasick – those waves! GAH! I LOVE a happy ending, so even though the poem was a little scary, I was glad it all ended well. Whew!

    1. Thank you! (And actually, YES! I have. It was horrible. I was around 2-4, and apparently we were far out and the “waves don’t break out that far”. Don’t believe your dad when he says that. They do… 😉 )

  16. Holy cow! This is one amazing team! I have no doubt that the two of them WILL be taking over the literary/art world if not the world at large. After reading this, my imagination still hasn’t found it’s way back to solid ground. The colors, the motion… “Nothing broken/except for/Dawn.” Wow.

  17. You are an inspirational pair! I love the layout of your poem and the hopefulness conveyed in your last line, Erik. The swirls of the waves caught my eye right away, Josie, and the way your sky goes from dark to light parallels the last line of the poem as well as the direction of the ship.

  21. Terrific Erik and Josie! Do you know the naval expression “Red at night, sailors’ delight. Red in the morning, sailors take warning.” Love how your collaborative work encompasses the night to day change as well! Bravo!

  25. Such a super-duper duo! I’m inspired and awed by their combined talent. And the haunting ending line of the poem, Nothing broken except for dawn’ will stay with me for days. Wonderful!
