You know that saying, “It was more fun than a barrel of monkeys?”—Well, I have always wondered what in the world could be more fun than a barrel of monkeys?
I mean really! Monkeys in a barrel would be so hard to beat. But this was more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
These are the notes I received from the 5th graders after my recent author visit. We talked poetry as I shared content from A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt. I, also, talked about revising poems to make them more appealing. As an example, I showed how Janet Wong and I emailed about revisions for my poem, Buttons, that was recently published in the Poetry Friday Anthology for Celebrations. This anthology was compiled by Janet Wong and Sylvia Vardell.
Landon and I did have our picture made together since I shared our collaboration on A Great Nephew and a Great Aunt 🙂
So if you ever want something more fun than a barrel of monkeys . . . try a school visit! The thank you notes are the BEST!
Awesome! Were you were as nervous as a banana in a barrel of monkeys?:)

Penny, Thank you for speaking to the fifth grade students at Shady Shores. They were extremely intrigued with you and Landon’s participation in your work. I really loved seeing the “thank you” cards posted on your blog.

Hooray! Go Penny! I have to share how revolutionary it is to constantly see only the profile pic headshot of our online friends and then to see a full body shot (as with the pic of you and Landon above)… it’s like, “Oh! Penny is not just a head! I can SEE her now! YAY!” It’s like meeting someone all over again. 🙂

Adorable, Penny! The notes are also touching and often inadvertently hilarious – i.e., here’s an excerpt from a school visit note from last month: “Dear Carole Gerber, You came away from Powell, Ohio. You are a very nice lady and loving kind and a beautiful lady. I hope I see you some other time. Turn to back. And we will miss you so much. Thank you. Alexa.” {When I “Turn to back” there is a drawing of Alexa and me – miraculously we are the same size – smiling and wearing polka dot dresses and high heels.

Fantastic, Penny — congratulations! I recently had my first Skype visit and it was indeed more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Here’s to many more when your beautiful debut book comes out in August. The kids are gonna love it — and you!
