A to Z Poetry Challenge Day 25—Penny: A Rare Collection

It’s Day 25 of the 26 day A to Z Poetry Challenge hosted by Rena Traxel. Here is a quote from Rena’s website about today’s challenge.” Y is for you. Today is all about you. I want you to spend the day thinking about yourself then write a poem. What is a self-portrait poem? It’s a poem about yourself.”

So, I did my first poem collection. Don’t be scared off by the word “collection”….My poems are short.

Penny-A Rare Collection

Pretty Penny

Coined in nineteen fifty-five
Pretty Penny—cooing live
Certificate, inscribed with pen
Christened tiny Penny Len.

Penny Wise: Note From Parents

Penny, life will be a surprise.
But we have prepared you,
and you are wise.
So when the penny drops,
and likely it will,
Just pause and ponder,
reflect and refill…
rolling through life can be dull and grimy—
but love can restore to bright and shiny.

Lucky Penny

Lucky Penny has sisters—three
Tris Cean, Cari Dee, Janna Lee.

A Penny Found

My husband is adept…
And knows a Penny found is a Penny kept.

Rare Coin

My son— not just chapter, but a book.
A rare coin in a mom’s heart-nook

A Penny For Your Thoughts

Ask this Penny for her thoughts
You’ll get whimsical, quirky jots!

Coin Toss

Life’s journey—a coin toss
Win, loss, win, loss…
Tails, heads—heads, tails
Attitude is what prevails.

In God I Trust

In God I Trust
A lifetime must!

A Penny on a Railroad Track

A Penny placed on life’s railroad track…
Smash-flash-smash-flash-smash-flash-smash-flash!
Becomes a valued treasure—always taken back!

  3. Great poem collection! I like the idea of creating a self portrait poem, and I’ve really liked this whole April poetry challenge…maybe I’ll join next year!

I used to flatten pennies on the rails out here when I was young…this year Canada is actually phasing out pennies. Which makes me wonder what our kids will think when we say lines like, “a penny for your thoughts”! A nickel doesn’t quite cut it…

  4. I love your collection! And the name is brilliant. A Penny Found made me giggle. I love that you were able to capture many different aspects of your life. I’m going to have try to write another self-portrait poem.

    1. Thanks Rena. What I liked about doing this is that I’ve never written an autobiographical poem….I share, but not too much publically…so when I wrote these I hoped to show that life has ups & downs but you can come out on the positive side of these. Several of the poems have pretty deep meaning for me, but I could share and not get too personal….hope that makes sense! And I think that’s what poetry is all about….a universal message that people can apply to themselves.

  5. Are you sure you didn’t have some of these tucked away somewhere? I can’t believe you did this in one day, Penny! IMPRESSIVE!! No, I can tell your titles you really thought about this collection of your poems. Penny Wise reminds me of Oh The Places You’ll Go. I think my favorite two are: A Penny Found & Rare Coin.

    1. None tucked away….just a Google search of “Penny” quotes. I tried incorporating it into one longer poem, but my rhythms were so different & that bugs me….so a collection….like a coin collection seemed fitting.
