G is for glee in Day 7 of the A to Z Poetry Challenge hosted by Rena Traxel. Rena’s guest today is Beth Stillborn. Beth is a published writer of hymn texts and tells us all about writing hymns. For the challenge today, we could write a poem that could be sung, or something that makes us gleeful. I combined the two and, in honor of Beth, I wrote my first children’s hymn.
Joy Within My Heart
Quack, Quack! Quack, Quack! Little ducklings wade. Quack, Quack! Quack, Quack! In a duck parade. Joy that sings within my heart Gives my day a gleeful start. And I thank my God above For all the things he’s made. Baa, Baa! Baa, Baa! Lambkins nibble hay. Baa, Baa! Baa, Baa! Lambkins romp and play.Joy that sings within my heart Gives my day a gleeful start. And I thank my God above For this and every day. Chirp, Chirp! Chirp, Chirp! Fledglings wake and yawn. Chirp, Chirp! Chirp, Chirp! Fledglings fed by Mom. Joy that sings within my heart Gives my day a gleeful start. And I thank my God above For every lovely dawn. Thank you! Thank, you! For each and every birth. Thank you! Thank you! For all that brings me mirth. Joy that sings within my heart Gives my day a gleeful start. And I thank my God above For my home on earth.

I loved this. I feel like such a cop out with the four lines that I wrote. Good job!

You are definitely not a cop out. I can’t imagine all the work you’re putting into your posts for the challenge!

Oh so sweet! As a gal who went to Bible School for many years and a person living with lots of farm critters, I think this is the sweetest! Please do play with the music, Penny! It has been so nice to “meet” you in here this week! Now to bed, dreaming of baby animals and joy…… a.

Can’t you just see little preschoolers singing this song at a Mother’s Day Brunch at school? Thinking some music needs to be added and posted on your blog very soon. This is one for the gleeful journal.

Kind of you to say. I do the whole music thing by ear. I can’t read or write a note. Maybe I’ll polish it a bit and try to send it off somewhere.

A tune popped in my head after I wrote the first couple of lines. Believe or not, it made it easier to get the meter and rhythm. What I wondered is if it would sound singable to others since they didn’t hear the tune!

Well, thank you, Beth! And thanks for your inspiration. My cousin has recording studios and she has asked me to consider meeting with her business partner and let him talk to me about writing for them. I’m unsure because my heart is in writing picture books right now. Maybe I could do both. I’m thinking about it.

That’s so sweet! And I’m delighted that I got you thinking about writing a hymn! The little ones in the Children’s Choir I used to accompany would have had fun singing that and doing actions to it.
